Your compulsory third party (CTP) insurance (also known as a green slip) is not valid when your vehicle is unregistered. This means that you will be held personally responsible for any compensation if you are involved in an accident. In other words, your financial situation can change dramatically in a matter of seconds.
Driving an unregistered vehicle is also an offence which attracts a $516 fine and if the vehicle also doesn't have CTP insurance, then another $516 fine can be issued. Many drivers think that they will get away with driving an unregistered vehicle by just using side streets around their home. The fact is that most accidents occur within close proximity of a driver’s home.
Roads and Maritime Services use all types of enforcement cameras such as red light and safety cameras to check if a vehicle is unregistered and/or doesn't have current CTP insurance. This means that if you are caught speeding or going through a red light, your number plate information is checked against the RMS records to determine if your vehicle is unregistered or without CTP insurance.
It is important to make sure that the vehicle you’re driving is registered and also that it has a current CTP insurance. Be smart and save yourself from the uncertainties of what could happen if you’re involved in an accident with an unregistered and/or uninsured vehicle.
